Townscape and Wayfinding: A Review of Existing Literature

Amidst the urban public health challenges in Malaysia, where obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and road traffic accidents are increasing, importance of walkability cities is gaining recognition. This paper provides an overview existing literature on visual structure townscapes its impact pedestrian navigation, investigating two main factors: environmental (visibility saliency) psychological (navigational competency). Urban studies theoretical progression explained compared. The review concludes that there a general consensus significance characteristics orienting environment. Specifically, degree permeability townscape scene availability salient cues significantly influence wayfinding performance. Additionally, individual difference, including spatial ability, also reflects utilisation for wayfinding. However, further research needed to explore holistic approach encompassing as whole (gestalt) context navigation.
